Collection: Baroque & Renaissance

The Renaissance (14th to 17th century) was a cultural movement that revived interest in classical art, science, and philosophy, focusing on humanism, individualism, and the natural world. It emphasised balance, proportion, and realism, with artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo perfecting techniques like perspective and chiaroscuro. In contrast, the Baroque (17th to mid-18th century) was characterized by dramatic expression, grandeur, and emotion, often using intense contrasts of light and shadow (tenebrism) and dynamic compositions. It was deeply connected to the Counter-Reformation and reflected in the works of artists like Caravaggio and Bernini.
