Collection: Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and theorist widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstract art. Originally influenced by Impressionism and Symbolism, Kandinsky gradually moved away from representational imagery, believing that color and form could directly express inner emotional and spiritual truths. His work became increasingly abstract, aiming to create a visual language akin to music—often referring to his paintings as 'compositions' or 'improvisations'. A key figure in the Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter and later associated with the Bauhaus, Kandinsky played a central role in shaping modern art's shift toward abstraction.
