What is Romanticism?
The Romanticism Art Movement originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th Century and for most of the Western world, it was at its peak from approx 1800 to 1850. Romanticism was used to describe the movement in art and literature which was “distinguished by a new interest in human psychology, expression of personal feeling and interest in the natural world.” (Tate, 2024.)
This emotional contrast to classical art saw the likes of artwork being produced by artists such as J. M. W. Turner, who The National Gallery describes as possibly “the best-loved English Romantic artist.”
Venice is often considered as one of the most romantic places to visit on earth. J. M. W. Turner is credited as capturing the magical ambience of Venice through his extensive collection of oil paintings, watercolours, and sketchbooks created on his trips to the floating city between 1819 and 1840.
